Preparing taxes is much easier when your business information is already organized. While the exact documents required depend on each case, there are several sets of information that are generally helpful.
Accounting reports
If you use QuickBooks or another accounting system, it's a good idea to check that your bank and credit card accounts are reconciled and that your main reports accurately reflect the year's transactions.
Account statements
Keep bank and credit card statements, especially when there are discrepancies that need to be reviewed or significant transactions that require documentation.
Income and expenses
Organize documents related to income, relevant expenses, contractors, payroll, and any other records that may be part of the business's tax information.
Entity documents
For LLCs and corporations, have available the basic entity information and any documents related to significant changes that occurred during the year.
This list is general. The required documents may vary depending on the type of return, the entity, and the taxpayer's situation.
